bio:
Joe Forrester is a 24 year old alternative folk-rock musician and multi-instrumentalist from Melbourne, Australia. He plays in acclaimed Melbourne band A Friend of Mine and has performed in many interesting bands including Innocent Cabbage, Poor People, Sacre Bleu!, Thatcher's Bloody England, VCA World Music Ensemble and collaborated with electro artists Bankai and High School Cheerleaders. But enough of the vacuous name-dropping.
Joe makes his songs in a tiny room at home that used to be open car-port but now is not. You can still see the outdoor brick on three of the walls inside the room. His musical interest started when his mum bought him a drum kit from the Trading Post for $150 when he was twelve. That drum kit went on to infuriate his older brother so much that as soon as he had the chance he left the country. It was also the beginning of Joe?s interest in being a ferociously loud metal drummer and hyper-experimental songwriter, which he was for over 10 years before all related projects turned to shit (mid 2008).
Around this time he found himself increasingly dabbling in his dad?s footsteps on the acoustic guitar, which typically added an as-yet-unwelcomed folky aspect to his songs. Whittling out a sound sailing somewhere between the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel, Ani Difranco and Joanna Newsom it soon it became his main musical project, enabling him to explore his long-held interests in songwriting, performing, self-recording and producing.
So far he has released four EP?s, claiming that ?like Larry David with every season of Curb Your Enthusiasm I keep telling myself each one will be the last. Every now and then I think I'd like to take a break from making music and get my act together but I just cannot stop. So fuck it.? His recordings typically have an independent homeliness and the lyrical content is generally very personal. He is currently working on his fifth release.
In August 2010 he made his live debut for his solo project with help from Melbourne musicians Patrick Walker and Chris Drane on the rhythm section. Despite being no stranger to the live scene he was clearly nervous as hell but made his way through it with a smile and looks forward to the next one.
?I hope you like the music on here. It is made with a lot of heart.? - Joe
