?Traditional pre-production, engineering and mixing disciplines in combination with new technology, adds a hybrid of past and proven sensibilities bringing together the best of both worlds. ?That sums up the approach of Vancouver-based recording studio veteran Delwyn Brooks, and it is a mandate that has made him an invaluable resource as an engineer for some of the biggest artists and producers in the music business.
Delwyn?s career choice was not unexpected, given that the studio is literally in his blood. You see, he?s the son of a legend in the Canadian recording industry, Bob Brooks, owner and operator of the notable Vancouver studio, Little Mountain Sound Studios, the breeding ground for many of the biggest rock/pop acts as well as for producers/engineers Bob Rock, Mike Fraser and the late Bruce Fairbairn. By osmosis, Delwyn learned invaluable lessons there that he continues to put into practice with today?s technology.
Mainstream talent was a constant presence at Little Mountain, and Delwyn shares one vivid memory of an early encounter. ?In my early teens, I would bus down to Little Mountain after school to get around the scene, program some ideas on my drum machine in what they called the ?Blue Room?; a place to chill out. Aerosmith were in recording Permanent Vacation, and I remember Steven Tyler walking down the hallway to get something to eat from the kitchen. On his way back to the control room, he popped in next to mine, paused, and loudly stated with his typical classic rasp, ?that?s a pretty bad jam you?re laying down there little man!? "Then he laughed and continued to bounce down the hallway scatting some tune quietly to himself."
At the age of 6, Delwyn first started flogging a make shift drum kit by breaking wood coat hangers from his closet (mom wasn?t happy) to use on empty 1 gallon ice crème containers. Then around the age of 8, after listening to a random track off a Led Zeppelin IV cassette, ?Black Dog?, he remembers wanting to study music. So with the support of his parents, he amassed a total of 14 years combined in formal training on the drums, percussion and classical piano, but the lure of the recording process took hold by the time he was 16. There were no favors granted by being the boss? son, though. ?I had to work four times as hard and had to keep my reputation 'clean', both metaphorically and literally. I learned that respect and opportunities were earned, not given; you make your own luck happen. In sports film and music, the 'school of hard knocks' are naturally built in let alone working in a high-end studio where everyone knows you?re there because you?re related. At times it seemed like everything was going against the grain. For the first 3 years I made dubs for the commercial division, the odd cassette for the current band recording, run for coffee and food, and session clean up. Working after hours and beyond the pay was the norm, and my orders were to keep my eyes and ears open and mouth shut. Just hang around, be wall paper, watch, listen, and learn.?
Brooks patiently waited his turn, keeping his nose to the grindstone as he moved through the pecking order, graduating from ?runner?, to ?second engineer?. Eventually as his studio expertise deepened, he moved into the field of mixing, something he now considers his forte. His skills as a recording engineer and co-producer remain in demand, however. A few sessions behind the groundbreaking Digidesign ICON console at noted Washington State Imperative Studios also proved invaluable.
A short list of Delwyn's session work.
AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Bad English, Barenaked Ladies, Bif Naked, Bryan Adams, Coverdale-Page, The Cranberries, Fear Factory, I Mother Earth, INXS, Iron Maiden, Joan Jett, Kevin Parent, Peter Frampton, Raffi, Randy Bachman, Skinny Puppy, Tom Cochrane, Van Halen. On the roots music side, his credits include K.d. Lang, Spirit of the West, Stephen Fearing, Mae Moore, and Anne Murray, while his versatile virtuosity has also been utilized by the likes of Andrew Lloyd Webber and The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
Working closely with such renowned producers/engineers, as Bruce Fairbairn (INXS, Cranberries, Van Halen, Chicago), Mike Fraser www.mikefrasermix.com (Coverdale-Page, AC/DC, Bad English, Iron Maiden), and the late John Vrtacic (Technical Director - Little Mountain Sound, Warehouse, and Armoury Studios), further boosted Delwyn?s skill sets. He singles out Fairbairn as a key influence, recalling that ?Bruce would insist we take notes, keeping track of every session nuance, in order to stay organized, on schedule and under budget. Such lessons are now used to the benefit of his clients.
Those who have worked in the studio with him are fulsome in their praise of his contributions.
Juno-winning producer Paul Gitlitz recruited Brooks to engineer and mix Linnea Good?s acclaimed CD, Crazy Faith. ?Delwyn is meticulous in the studio,? Gitlitz recalls. "He offers arrangement ideas and critique when prompted. I think with our combined efforts the product we delivered, was more than the sum of the parts and I am proud of it and happy to have worked with Delwyn. I know even after producing a Juno winner album and several nominees, I still learned a few things working with Delwyn."
Of late, Delwyn has been collaborating extensively with Michael Behm, www.michaelbehmmusic.com, www.reverbnation.com/michaelbehmmusiccom, the Vancouver Island-based pop-rock singer/songwriter/producer with a rapidly growing international online following (over 1.7 million plays). Behm explains, ?I have recorded / mixed 100 plus songs in 13 years with Delwyn and he blows me away every time we work together. He came through the ranks at Little Mountain when engineers had to know their stuff. He is a reflection of his mentors. Combine that with his winning attitude and you have a great musical partner! He is one of the best engineers working today."
Modern recording technology has encouraged a DIY approach for many artists, but, as Delwyn perceptively notes, ?the flow of new technology is a gift to the entire music creation process, but there still remains timeless and invaluable methodologies that need not be forgotten. This isn't a new idea but demands reinforcement. As technology constantly changes with incredible speed and flexibility, it can also create an environment of apathy, or a 'fix it in the mix' mind-set." Calling in a professional can pay huge dividends resulting in a project going from good to great. Delwyn Brooks is one true professional.
Delwyn and his wife Julie live in British Columbia?s lower mainland and while his passion for the recording/mixing process burns bright, he has always prioritized balancing his primary commitments to his wife and their two boys, Cody and Brenden.
